Gingerbread Village Project

While learning about area and perimeter, Mrs. Kristen Woods’ 3rd-grade math group was given the task of designing and building a gingerbread house. The group decided to work together to build an entire Gingerbread Village including a grocery store, bakery, town hall, family home, carriage, and even a barn! They designed scaled blueprints of their home and found the total perimeter, area, and surface areas of each side and roof. From these blueprints, they constructed their gingerbread building. They "shopped at the candy store" to get things to decorate their building. Finally, they calculated the cost of their building based on the price and unit price of the candy used. It was a great lesson with an amazing village as a result!
