SV Academic Challenge Team Wins TV2 Championship Match

The Sandy Valley Academic Challenge team won the championship match against Garaway on the TV Channel 2 game show taped on April 3.  The first Team Round category was Social Studies, and Sandy Valley pulled ahead by a score of 13 - 9.  At the end of Team Round #2 (Science), Sandy Valley was behind 23 - 28.  At the end of the Third Team round (Arts & Literature), Sandy Valley was still behind by 5 points, with score 37 - 42.  The last Team Round category of Pop Culture was a good one for Sandy Valley as they made up the deficit and led by 1 point (50 - 49) going into the Lightning Round. 

The competition was fast and furious, but Sandy Valley racked up the points to win the championship match by a final score of 68 - 58.  The team received a plaque commemorating their accomplishment.  To get to the Championship Match, Sandy Valley won a match against Ridgewood (53 - 42) on November 21, 2017, and won a semi-final match against New Philadelphia (51 - 45) on February 15.   The show aired on May 1 on Spectrum Channel 2, and can be found on YouTube soon.

The team belongs to the TCAL (Tri-County Academic Challenge League) and plays regular season matches with teams from Lake, North Canton Hoover, GlenOak, Marlington, McKinley, New Philadelphia, Jackson, Central Catholic, Perry, and St. Thomas Aquinas. Members of the team are seniors Bronson Frank and Liam Ott, juniors Kennedy DeLong and Lauren Zehnder, sophomores Nathan Ashton, Shelby Baisden, Quinten Hanlon, Breanna Lowery, Micaela Mead, and Hallie Osborne, and freshman Maddie McKelley.The team is coached by Mrs. Jann Coates, a teacher at Sandy Valley Elementary School.
