posted May 20, 2019, 4:28 AM by Allison Morris

The fifth annual Sandy Valley Retirement Recognition Dinner was held on Wednesday, May 8, at Tozzi’s On 12th, with over 100 people attending.  After the social hour and dinner, the two retirees, Michelle Allison-Palmer and Laura Brown, were honored with a short program. Elementary Principal, Dr. Victor Johnson, introduced kindergarten teacher Laura Brown, and High School Principal, Mr. Matthew Whitted, introduced business teacher Michelle Allison Palmer.  The Sandy Valley Education Association President, Jen Veigel, and Sandy Valley School Board members, Ike Winters and Lynne Herstine, gave the retirees personalized gifts that recognized their many years of service. Finally, Sandy Valley retiree, Paula Tolin, read humorous and poignant poems she wrote for each retiree.

Laura Brown started her teaching career in Special Education for 17 years before becoming a Kindergarten teacher for the past 19 years.  She lives in Dover and has two daughters, Jillian and Chelsea. Chelsea and her husband, Evan, live in Westerville with their four-week old son, Corey, Laura’s first grandchild!  She plans to babysit Corey when she retires, and wants to travel, volunteer and RELAX!

Michelle Allison-Palmer has been Sandy Valley High School’s Business teacher and College Credit Plus instructor through Stark State for the past 26 years.  She has coached HS softball and MS volleyball and is the “Voice of the Lady Cardinals.” Michelle is also the Business Professionals and Senior Class advisor.  She served as SVEA’s vice president, treasurer, and building rep. She resides in Bolivar with her husband, Paul. She has a niece, nephews and great niece, and two stepchildren (spouses) and two grandchildren. Michelle plans to travel, spend more time with family, read, and garden when she retires.

The dinner was made possible by several sponsors throughout the years, including Tom Maurer of Maurer Financial Services, Sandy Valley Alumni Association, Sandy Valley Education Association, Mike & Susan Lancaster of New Market Financial Advisors, Deb Simonetti, Mike & Phyllis Crone, and Sandy Valley OAPSE/Local 450.
