Read Like a Champion: Right to Read Week Begins Feb. 26th!

posted Feb 22, 2018, 10:42 AM by Allison Morris
Right to Read week begins Monday, February 26 and runs through Friday, March 2. There are tons of exciting things happening this year! The theme is "Read like a Champion" with emphasis on the winter Olympics.

Tomorrow will be the kick-off to Right to Read Week with an Opening Ceremony assembly. Students will wear the color of their pod as they walk into the ceremony showing their “teams.” There is a very special guest coming to speak about what it takes to be a champion, how they can become their own champion and a little history on his road to becoming a champion. The speaker is Ryan Kienzle who qualified and ran in the 2012 London Olympic trials.

The goal for this year is to read every night and fill out their book slips (which have the picture of a medal on it) then return the completed book slips to school the next day. At the end of the week, the grade levels that have read the most books will win prizes. There are three prizes: a gold medal prize (movie and popcorn), a silver medal prize (cookies), and a bronze medal prize (Smarties).

Each grade level will give winter Olympic facts during the morning announcements, and each grade level will be doing Olympic-type projects and crafts throughout the week within their pod.

Lastly, during Right to Read week students will dress up each day according to the Olympic ring colors.

The theme days will be wearing the colors of the Olympic Rings:
Monday- blue
Tuesday- yellow
Wednesday- black
Thursday- green
Friday- red

In addition to the events, the SV Branch of the Stark Co. District Library is having a contest for the SV elementary students throughout Right to Read Week.  Every time the student visits the library, he/she can get a ticket to put in a raffle for a prize.  Students can visit the library from Feb. 23 until March 1.  The winning tickets will be drawn on Friday, March 2.

Go for the gold, Cardinals!
