Hunger: The Bus Stops Here Food Drive

posted Apr 18, 2018, 4:46 AM by Allison Morris
This year, Sandy Valley, along with many districts in the Stark County ESC, are participating in the Akron-Canton Food Bank's Fill the Bus event. This county-wide event ends with us "Filling the Bus" with food and donations.

This district-wide event kicks off Friday, April 20, and runs through Friday, April 27. Donations will be taken daily, and the class in each building with the most donation wins a cupcake party!  Donating is easy - food donations and monetary donations will both be accepted and appreciated. The Akron-Canton Food Bank can stretch $1 to make 4 meals. Top food donations include canned soup, mac and cheese, peanut butter, boxed cereal, canned tuna, canned vegetables, pasta and more! Monetary donations can be given online by clicking here: DONATE!

Hunger has a huge impact on children in schools. In classrooms across the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank’s eight-county service area, nearly 1 in 4 children will face hunger this year.  The Akron-Canton Foodbank works to meet the needs and provide hope to these children and their families struggling with hunger by distributing more than 110,000 pounds of food daily.

Some quick facts about hunger:

Hunger Facts

  • 1 in 7 individuals in our service area is food insecure, meaning they lack regular access to safe and nutritious food
  • More than 1 in 5 children in our service area is food insecure
  • 30 percent of the members of households served by the Foodbank are children under the age of 18 years old
  • 80 percent of individuals served by the Foodbank have a high school diploma or higher education
  • 81 percent of individuals served by the Foodbank report purchasing the cheapest food available, even if they know it's not the healthiest option
Thank you all for participating in this challenge!
