Before Christmas, with the help of Chris Essig and his high school science classes, an elf visited each classroom at Sandy Valley Elementary School.  Each classroom received a stocking that included a small activity for the kids, candy, and a note from the elf.  This is the second year this elf has visited the elementary.  However, this year the elementary students were challenged to a penny drive.  The elementary students collected a grand total of $210!  Mr. Essig and Mr. Johnson, the elementary principal, chose to donate the money to the Canton Ex-News Boys.

The Canton Ex-News Boys Association was formed and incorporated in February 1960 as a 100 percent charitable organization.  There are no paid officials or employees.  The 278 members pay dues to cover operating expenses of postage, stationary, luncheons, etc. - thus the motto "100 percent charity."  The money they raise is used exclusively for shoes and clothing for needy school children.  Their slogan is "That No School Child Shall Miss School For Need of Shoes or Clothing."  The Canton Ex-Newsboys have been around for 56 years and have served 52,290 children with 233,445 items of shoes and/or clothing at a total cost of $3,991,241.59.
